COD MW3: Team Play

DISCLAIMER: I’m bored, its 8AM, I’ve had very little sleep. This is also very long and about COD.

I do not like losing, I make no secret of it.  I am a bad sport, too.  In some cases I am almost proud of how bad of a sport I can be.  I enjoy, ‘playing the heel’  so to speak.  Thats probably because I’m a bit of an arse, but hey - I’m not too bothered.  One of the ways to avoid losing in COD is to roll with a party, but this does not always guarantee success…

I can only speak from personal experience, but in my opinion the bit that the parties I play with most often fall down in most often is in terms of team play.  People always spout, ‘play the objective’, but even within the same game mode that can mean a number of things.  My favourite game type is Domination so I’ll talk about that.  I will use two examples, the first being the sort of ‘daytime’ party I play with, who are very casual gamers.  They have played a lot of hours of Call of Duty in general, but (at least in my opinion) do not try very hard, or put their effort in the wrong areas.  ’Team Daytime’ as I’ve decided I’ll call them are highly disorganised, and with the exception of myself, all on average finish with a negative KD.  It is very hard to get across to Team Daytime that winning is even a priority, which is kind of a key reason my performances with this group are pretty poor.  In broad terms, if the team isn’t all on the same page it’s going to be hard to pull off wins consistently.

If I were to make a vague suggestion for Team Daytime to win more often, (apart from agreeing that winning was the target result) it would firstly be to use, ‘easy’ guns like the Type 95, ACR, MP7 and PP90M1, paired with classes that make use of Assassin, and when necessary Blind Eye and Dead Silence.  That would go some way to alleviating the issue of the low KDs.  I would also suggest use of Support Point-Streaks, as consistent Kill Streaks would be unlikely.  In terms of gameplay, for Domination I would suggest a pretty defensive strategy, with camping flags being the main objective. I will post a detailed strategy, with specific class set ups and stuff for my own amusement if nothing else, later.

The other example, (who should logically be called, ‘Team Nighttime’ I suppose) have a slightly different problem.  They too are a group of experienced Call of Duty players, however these players are less casual, and far more able.  Each of these players have a positive KD, and the few that I most regularly play with have a KD of over 1.5, which is pretty decent.  I have a lot more success playing with this team, however there is an issue which is probably common among clans of fairly decent players.  This is that most of the party, myself included, habitually play pretty much as we would if we were playing alone.  The added success comes from the fact that we are guaranteed teammates that will get a good score most of the time, not from any particular team play.  It is essentially the reverse of Team Daytime - Team Nighttime all play to win, and regularly get a good KD, whereas Team Daytime don’t specifically play to win and have the disadvantage of regular poor scores.

If we were to play Domination more often my suggestion to avoid silly losses would be to organise ourselves more into specific roles.  If we wanted to be super nerd, we could organise these roles based on KD, or playstyle for example.  Designated players that capped/protected a flag, shot down air support if necessary, protected cappers and built air-support Point-Streaks would be far more successful than our current system of capping two flags and hoping for the best individual KDs possible.
